Discovering Literature

A WebQuest for A2-B1 Students

Teacher's Page

Foreword

I have chosen this particular topic for two reasons. The first one is that I wanted to suggest an interesting and stimulating subject to the eyes of my students. Motivation is in fact essential for the success of any given activity. Secondly, I wanted my pupils to investigate literature. In fact, all languages live in historical, geographical and cultural contexts that are worth being introduced to the learners.

Level

This webquest has been designed for students, who have reached the A2/B1 level of the European Portfolio of Languages. However, this webquest can be easily used for and adapted to higher levels.

Length

As stated in "Process", the pupils have 135 minutes to complete the tasks. However, certain factors such as the pupils' ability to surf the Internet and their level of understanding can influence the exact amount of time requested to finish the webquest.

Aims

This webquest has been designed to achieve the following aims:

  • To improve the students' abilities to visit different websites and improve their computer skills in general.
  • To learn words related to the topic of literature.
  • To improve the reading skills, in particular the ability of skimming and scanning.
  • To organise the work in groups efficiently, in order to achieve the given task.
  • To select and summarise the most relevant information on the topic.
  • To improve the students' organisational skills by elaborating the material found on the Internet.
  • To improve their ability to structure an oral presentation and present it convincingly to the class.
  • To evaluate the classmates during their oral presentation.
  • To enrich the students' cultural and personal profile.
  • To focus on the difference between the past simple and the present perfect.

Tips

Here is some useful advice:

  1. Pre-activities are of great help: they raise the students' interest and challenge them with difficult words.
  2. Make sure your pupils are familiar with authentic material; this is very important for the webquest's successful outcome.
  3. It's also useful to organise the oral presentations as a competition. This encourages the students to give their best.
  4. Considering that computers are becoming a useful tool for language learning, here are some websites that you can visit for extra activities:
